I cant help but to wonder why a god so loving, so forgiving would give us the freedom of “free will” and at the same time say. “my way or no way” — if im incorrect i can only hope that god is as forgiving as he claims
Yes, this was edited to include only the part about Mormonism. You can go to the TED site and get the whole monologue by MS Sweeney. Key in ‘letting go of god’ into a google search box and pick the TED hit.
Her full monologue is about 16 mins and includes her 7th Birthday, Santa Claus and others.
The South Park episode “All About the Mormons?” addresses the ridiculousness of the Mormon beliefs in a similarly comical manner. I must agree with that episode’s essential argument: while their beliefs may not hold up to scientific scrutiny, their religion seems to cultivate fine people. If you’re purely a secularist, you have to be impressed by their per-capita income figures. Maybe they’re on to something?
I have watched A LOT of TED Talks videos on YouTube and this is the FIRST ONE that has been cut before it finished and i can’t find another one that is whole. I reckon this is not a coincidence. I reckon someone is filtering YouTube, and this is not the first time i have noticed it!
Yes she was. She’s best known for playing the androgynous character: Pat. She also played Raquel, Winston Wolfe (Harvey Keitel)’s girlfriend in Pulp Fiction.
Incredible how the existence of ‘god’ is never questioned by some people. Despite all the evidence that the Abrahamic faiths are predicated on scientific nonsense, she goes along with this notion of a creator who made everything EVERYTHING! in six days. That means all the creatures that ever where and ever will be were made by a supernatural being is six 24 hour periods of time. We KNOW that is nonsense. We know it. So I can’t get past this fantasy to start considering all the rest. It is fake
It’s just part of a whole one-woman show in which she describes her moving from faith to atheism. No moral as such I reckon but it was very recognisable to me and I’d guess a lot of others who’d watch it. The whole show is worth a watch as it knits the narrative together way better.
Yes, she goes on to describe how the questions raised by her visit from the Mormons induced her to start going to a Catholic church again (she was raised Catholic), and during a bible study course at the church she started to suspect that the bible was crazy.
Yes, she may have gotten some of the mormon tale incorrect, but she was only relaying what the missionaries supposedly said to her. The RIGHT mormon tale is incredibly ridiculous. And all the other religions are just as ridiculous.
“julia had a lot of the facts right (about mormons) but a lot incorrect as well. i reckon the best lesson from this video is don’t believe everything you hear”
Well, even if julia got some of the details incorrect, it doesn’t take away from the truth of her pont – which is that religions are strewn with laughable superstitutions and simply wacky teachings.
i have to admit that i smiled while watching this, but i reckon it’s more amusing that she’s making fun about the mormon religion, while christianity can be a laugh for every other religion as well.
in a boat from jerusalem to america in 600 bc? sure, that doesn’t sound evitable – but
noah building an arch where all the animals of the world fit in? that’s just as fucked up as the mormon tale… serious
Ha ha. I can relate to this because i was a Mormon missionary just a few years ago. It’s extremely hard to walk up to random doors and attempt to share what you believe. Julia had a lot of the facts right, but a lot incorrect as well. I reckon the best lesson from this video is don’t believe everything you hear.
@dankwilliams If you listen to the rest of her talk she states exactly the same thing.
@beogradwill Dread, indoctrination, desire and pure stupidity can do that.
“of course I believe in god” lol
wow religion is such utter bullshite!

lol what a amusing tale
Yes I agree. I have the CD, but I’d like to see it live.

didnt she used to be on SNL?

Dull.

So what is the point of all this?
At the end she finds out that she is at least as stupid as the Mormons?
I don’t get it.

All you need to know about the Mormons is that they are offspring of the KKK and are a death cult.
woof!
man is she hideous.
didn’t know that. thank you for the information
If you watch/listen to her entire show, she discusses christianity as well.
