This seems like its been done before…its like the Taoist version of the Matrix, but a lot less exciting. The book is listed under “thriller” but I found nothing thrilling about it. I kept reading waiting for something exciting to happen, but was left with disappointment.
Ahlgren seems to write a fictitious auto-biography. Indeed, the first half of the book is very slow…he plays chess, he gets into financial markets, lives in durango & austin, and likes existentialism. Any research into Ahlgren’s life reveals these facts, so he’s taking “write what you know” a small too far.
I highly doubt any further publications from the author would have different topics, character types, or inspiration. I didn’t care about the characters and saw the ending a mile away. I kept reading waiting for something to happen. A few things did, but they weren’t exciting.
The Taoist concepts, though well researched and laid out in layman’s terms, could probably be found on any Wiki. Like I said, skip this and watch the Matrix trilogy.
Reminds me of a joke: Why did the Buddhist refuse Novocaine at the dentist? He wanted to transcend dental medication!

…but marred by far too much gratuitous vulgar dialogue and one thoroughly disgusting poem. Nevertheless, it offered a lot of fascinating metaphysical thoughts and many incisive observations. The thought of a single world-wide currency, for example, is one that, in my view, should be worked toward. This is a book worth reading, but hold your nose.

Let me make this small and sweet: If you haven’t already added this to your wishlist or your shopping cart- DO IT NOW.
When I first heard about this book, I tried buying it at a couple different stores but everywhere I went, it was sold out…which of course only drove my curiosity even more. When I finally got a copy in my hands, I couldn’t place it down…which was slightly problematic, as I was sitting in traffic.
In all seriousness, I found it to be a well-written, fantastic read from the get go. I never would have thought I would find chess or quantum physics remotely fascinating, but Mr. Ahlgren has certainly piqued my interest. His sense of humor and writing style are refreshing as is his capability to clarify concepts which I had clearly never understood before.
I hear he is currently working on his next book and I can’t wait to read it! =0)

I bought “Discipline” after reading a few reviews on line.
I was disappointed. I would not recommend this book to anyone. The plot was ridiculous, the characters, except for the main character, were one dimensional, the science was adolescent, and the philosophy reminded me of my sophomore year at university.

“Discipline” is truly a worthwhile read, one of those rare works that will stay with you long after you’ve place it down. Excellent writing is an art form, and too many authors get caught up in writing to please the masses and end up failing to get their point across. Ahlgren writes for himself, and it shows. “Discipline” is a fantastic work of art that deserves to be read over and over.
The author has successfully taken on topics that we’ve all been fascinated with at one point or another. More importantly, he has shown that there is colossal connection between science, politics, economics and spirituality and that they are not mutually exclusive of one another. It’s STIMULATING! It is one of those very rare works that begs for a second and third reading. My first reading was an adrenaline rush. I couldn’t place it down. My second reading proved to be much more revealing than my first. . .you’ll know what I mean when you read it for yourself. “Discipline” is the perfect book for discussion groups, it is sure to spark some passionate and fascinating dialog. I look forward to reading Mr. Ahlgren’s next work of art!
